Lois Herdman
Lois started to paint when she finished work in 2001. Although she is a late starter she knew that this is what she wanted to do and so joined the Mana Arts Society. "I have always liked to draw and began painting in watercolour (which I still enjoy today) then progressed into the acrylics to explore colour and texture. Last year I painted mainly in oils." Deidree Hutchins
I work in acrylic and enjoy both landscape and abstract work. Inspired mostly by my local landscape I use strong colour pallets to give vibrancy to my paintings, usually working in multiple layers to give a richness and depth to a piece. I believe the creative process is a journey and I like allowing my art to keep evolving; to listen to the intuitive response that happens when painting and incorporate that into my work.
I have always loved art, particularly painting. Apart from majoring in art while at Teacher’s College in the late 80’s and a year studying at The Learning Connexion I consider myself largely self-taught. Career and family life slowed the creative process for a few years and is has only been since joining the Mana Arts Society in 2020 that I have really gained momentum with my painting. This involvement has provided many opportunities to attend courses, exhibit work and connect with other local artists. The painting I entered into the 2020 Friends of Pataka Art Awards sold, as did a piece exhibited in the Mana Arts exhibition. This then lead to me taking part in the Friends of Pataka Arts Trail in 2021, selling several of my works and gaining many more followers on my Instagram and Facebook pages. Since then I haven’t looked back.
